Abstract: The concept of Lean Production was originally created and formulated by Toyota’s director ”Taichii Ohno” in Japan 1950. In the beginning of the 1990’s, Lean Production, was introduced in Europe by the Americans James P. Womack, Daniel T. Jones and Daniel Roos. Lean became one of the most ’hyped’ concepts in production management at the time. In 1996 James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones published the book ’Lean Thinking’. The book is based upon five principles, how to build a Lean organisation by eliminating waste and minimizing resources. Several companies in Denmark, have in the last twenty years, implemented the Lean thinking strategies and the aim of Lean is to optimize and enhance the numerous production processes. The purpose of this assignment is to answer the question: ”How to evaluate the succes criteria of implementing Lean in the Danish Production Industry” In order to answer this question, a qualitative multiple case study of three companies, has been completed. The three companies have their own unique approach and they all have experienced individual challenges and problems implementing Lean in production. The respondents have, through interviews, told about their different experiences and their internal positions on the Lean thinking strategies. In order to answer, the above standing main question to be solved, an analyze has been created using the results of the interview and the gathered secondary data, the five principles, Womack and Jones. The analyzing part, of the assignment, shows that Lean is not only a toolbox, but a process which will inevitably have to be carried out long term. It represents a strategy which is formulated by the board of directors and implemented by the employees. Through the completed assignment I have learned how difficult it is implementing Lean thinking og how miscellaneous Lean can be regarded. The succes criteria of implementing Lean strategies are evaluated by how the five principles are used in the companies and how they evaluate flow – and ressource effiency continuously. Velux A/S has achieved the highest score in combining the flow – and ressource efficiency. The board of directors leaves their focus on best practices today, tomorrow and in the future. This is Lean.
