Author: Michalas, Theodoros
Abstract: This master’s thesis seeks to examine and analyze the existing innovation system in the island of Corfu, in Greece, regarding the tourism industry. The study is based upon the examination of three main actors in the island’s socio-economic structure. The local political governance, the local academic institution and the local private sector, in their cooperation for enhancing the touristic market. The main focus is to compare the interrelation and collaboration status among these three actors, with the Triple Helix innovation model, which will be considered to be the most suitable one, in order for the island’s tourism industry to advance and become more effective. The idea is that, a more effective collaboration among the local government, university and entrepreneurs can enhance the tourism industry, which appears to be the island’s main and most important income source throughout the last decades. This paper aims at depicting the current system’s effectiveness, using interviews, as different angles, from people who appear to play key roles, in the island’s touristic sector. Moreover, there will be a discussion, in order to assess the alterability of the current system, such as also the island’s political and social capabilities, that can lead to possible changes. A more sophisticated design of the collaboration structure among the three actors, could release a different and more dynamic system, where scientific knowledge will provide the decision makers, with more useful and pragmatic tools. This way, political decisions can be more effective and therefore, build a different kind of trust with the private sector and the academia. A strong position of the university in this triad, could grant more innovation space for the island’s tourism, something beneficial for all parts, and will release the opportunity to exploit new types of tourism, which Corfu is able to provide. An example can be seen, regarding the historical and archeological type of tourism worldwide. Ionian University of Corfu, operates a history faculty, where historical data has been collected from the island’s long history. A weak role of the university could leave some unexploited touristic market space, out of reach for the entrepreneurs, whereas its strong presence, can release profitable activity.
