dc.description.abstract The thesis start with explaining the many reasons why employees may be sick and studies which have sought to quantify the extent of absenteeism. There are a special focus on the causes of stress related absenteeism, primarily: 1. the demands of the job 2. the control an employee kill the sina work 3. the support they modtage from managers and kollegaer 4. relationships in the workplace 5. the employee's role in the organization 6. organisatorisk change and how it's managed. Then I define employee engagement. What does it mean, why is it relevant to a knowledge-based business? It describes the effects of commitment. How effects occur and how they are maintained. I explain what the theory says about these issues. I analyze in detail the relevant knowledge enterprises culture and strategy in relation to involvement, including what can be identified empirically in this context, is there evidence? Then I analyze the relationship between the causes of absenteeism and employee engagement by identifying the causes of sickness absence theoretically affected by employee commitment and the respective HRM tools` effectiveness in this context. I also explain the empirical data that supports the theoretical effects. I conclude that many studies indicate that the theoretical positive effects on sick leave as a result of a generally high employee engagement in practice may be obtainable. Engagement and thus reduce sick leave is more to be expected if the company has a strong culture and a clearly communicated strategy, and if there is a match between employee skills and organization. The perspective is, that the many other positive effects of a large employee engagement is making the companies more competitive. In addition, there are great benefits to society and for the individual employee. Employees spends a large part of their lives at work, their involvement translates into improved quality of life and gives them a surplus in their relationships with other people. en_US
